About Me

About Me

Freshman year, I enrolled in Journalism-1, an introductory journalism course. I learned the basics of the craft, especially enjoying the casual, creative writing style I hadn’t encountered in English class, almost a mix of expository, “SAT” writing and creative writing.

Sophomore year, I joined the school newspaper, The ReMarker, as a staff writer, writing to deadlines, improving my interviewing skills, and learning how to design pages. I was on the admissions and chapel beats, so I would check in with the admissions department and chaplain for updates before each cycle.

Junior year, I became an editor of the Issues section, which localizes national issues to the St. Mark’s community. I am most proud of “Insulin’s Deadly Spike,” a story I wrote which explored the astronomical rise in insulin prices and how it has forced many diabetics to ration their doses, putting their lives at risk. I wanted the community to understand just how difficult living with diabetes can be.

This year, my senior year, I am the Editor-in-Chief and lead a 50-person staff, producing seven editions of the newspaper, four magazines, and two separate, recurring podcasts. I’ve learned not only how to be a storyteller but also how to lead my peers in pursuit of a significant goal. From helping staff members brainstorm story angles and sources to leading post-production evaluations, I’ve made it my goal to keep the entire staff motivated and involved. I challenge them to consider the perspectives and sources that aren’t readily apparent. Routinely I encourage the younger journalists to go above and beyond just meeting a deadline, to trust their instincts and write the best story they can.

During my time in journalism at St. Mark’s, I’ve learned a lot about writing creatively and making everyday stories engaging while grappling with my own explorations into the topics that interest me. Journalism has given me a platform to contribute to and influence my community, a skill I’m eager to develop further.
